DAVID KIM (E-RYT 500) is a Senior Teacher Trainer for Los Angeles-based YogaWorks studio, and leads his own YogaWise Yin Yoga TT all over the world. David actively pursues the path of knowledge (jnana) in his yoga practice, embracing the depth, native intelligence, and profound stillness of Yin Yoga. He thanks primary teachers Paul & Suzee Grilley for lighting the Yin path with humor and wisdom, and is further grateful for Sarah Powers’s poetic meditations, Gil Hedley’s philosophical dissections, and the numerous Krishnamacharya-lineage teachers who guided his yogic evolution. David supplements his ongoing meditation practice with Mindfulness studies at InsightLA, and his Yin and Vinyasa classes may be viewed on MyYogaWorks.com, YogaVibes, and YouTube. Jennifer (RYT 500, E-RYT 200) has over a decade of teaching experience in the U.S. and Australia. She has been at the forefront of Yin Yoga in Australia and leads Yin and Hatha yoga teacher trainings, retreats, and workshops worldwide. Her Yin Yoga journey has been guided by Paul Grilley and further enriched by Sarah Powers. She studies anatomy with leading fascia researcher and educator Tom Myers (author of Anatomy Trains) and dissected a human cadaver under the guidance of “somanaut” Gil Hedley. In her teaching, she explores the relationship between the physical pathways of our connective tissues and the meridian system of Chinese medicine. She draws inspiration from all different kinds of movement whether it’s yoga, dance, martial arts, or Olympic Lifting! Asked by an interviewer at Modern Yogi, “What does yoga mean to you?” Jennifer replied, “Through yoga, we get this amazing opportunity to study the universe by studying ourselves – all the principles, all the systems, all the dynamics of nature are right there inside us and the process of discovery is still really thrilling to me.” Learn more about Jennifer at: yoga.jencrescenzo.com
Why Study Yin with Us?
David and I met while studying with Paul Grilley and immediately bonded because of our shared passion for storytelling (he worked as a journalist in NYC and for Universal Studios in LA and I spent over a decade writing and producing documentary films in Washington D.C.) We discovered that we were also both anatomy geeks and eventually teamed up to dissect a human cadaver with Gil Hedley. Following our work in the dissection lab, David and I co-created and facilitated the “Yin Sessions” in Melbourne. While collaborating on the Yin Sessions, we realized that my study of chinese meridians, his study of mindfulness, our extensive background in sports and movement, and our shared passion for all things anatomy made us a pretty good team! So, we decided to develop a 100 Hour Yin Teacher Training retreat that would teach not just the anatomy and philosophy of Yin Yoga but also the language of Yin. Pioneering research has led us to a new understanding of connective tissue that redraws the western map of the body and orients us towards an anatomy of connection visible in the ancient Taoist and Yogic maps of meridians and nadis. In our training you will learn about this anatomy of connection from both an eastern and western perspective and how to communicate this cutting-edge understanding in clear, practical, and relevant ways through your posture selection, cueing, and sequencing. You will learn to tell a new story about the body through the language and philosophy of Yin Yoga!
Your Island Home:
Your home from August 14-28 will be the island resort of Wadroika: www.waidroka.com
Waidroka is less than a 2 hours drive from Nadi airport on the main island Viti Levu. Although it’s easy to get to Wadroika, it is nestled in a stunning rainforest that offers seclusion. It’s a perfect mix of easy access to Pacific Harbor – the adventure capital of Fiji – and the tranquility of a boutique resort offering Fijian hospitality, three delicious cooked meals a day, and various Fijian cultural activities. Accommodation is in traditional Bures with en suite bathrooms, mini fridges, and private terraces or gardens for relaxing.
When you need a little Yang to balance out your Yin study, Wadroika can organize adventures that include world-class surfing and diving! Daily activities at the resort include kayaking, SUP, and swimming off a private pontoon in crystal clear Fijian waters. You can also cool off by the pool in a hammock or a daybed or enjoy a trek through the rainforest that surrounds the resort. Kayaks, Paddle Boards, and snorkel gear are provided by the resort at no additional charge. Surfing and diving adventures can be arranged at your own expense.
