A few weeks ago in Krabi, Thailand we climbed 1,200 steps to a mountaintop Buddhist temple. It’s a strenuous climb in the unrelenting heat and the hand-carved steps are steep and set far apart. Monkeys swing from the trees, gazing curiously at weary pilgrims. On the way up I passed a group of women making this pilgrimage for the first time. They were struggling and taking frequent rest breaks. One said anxiously, “I don’t know if I can make it. My heart is strong but my body is weak.” I saw her later at the top of the mountain, beaming amidst the serene Buddhas and dancing Ganeshas of the temple grounds. We can train our bodies relentlessly but it is our hearts that take us to places we never thought possible.
